| Montgomery 250 OHV 1937 Montgomery 250cc OHV J.A.P 1937. First registered on 17th January 1937. A pretty rare model which is very attractive and has a sporting look. The oil tank is a wrap around' and there is a sump/crankcase guard in place. The gearbox is a 3 speed Albion and selects fine. The brakes are not too bad and do work quite well. The saddle is an original Terry's with the metal plate riveted to the rear. The front forks are Webb. This Montgomery appears to have been restored in the early 1970's, looking into the spark plug hole, there is no carbon on the piston and the guards are clean underneath, so it appears the motorcycle has stood for some 28 years or so. I did own this in 1987, the guy I bought the bike from then is no longer around, sadly. He did buy the Montgomery in 1981 in the condition it is now in - well' maybe a little brighter.. The Montgomery motorcycles were sold by the only London dealers who were Renno's, Upper Street, Islington. where they have a third of a page advert in The Motorcycle magazine of 3rd June 1936 showing a Montgomery 250 OHV J.A.P. that is how they describe the model. The price is 29 Gns. (that's £29 and 29 shillings ( 1 shilling = 5p)) or £7. 12s. 3d. deposit and 6s. 6d weekly payments. Looking through several late 1930s motorcycle magazines and the dealers offering motorcycles for sale, there are no Montgomeries for sale at any of the big main dealers. I feel very few of this model was sold. The Montgomery factory was wrecked in 1940 by a German aircraft bombing raid and never re-started motorcycle production after WW2, and ended in 1940, many other famous motorcycle manufacturers ended production in 1939 never to re-start, like New Imperial who were also bombed and so were all the records sadly. Several people have said this model is a Terrier But it is not, the Terrier models introduced for 1939 had a sprung frame, upright engine and Web tube forks. The Montgomery starts easy and runs OK with no smoke and sounds really good. Am becoming very fond of this interesting sporting look motorcycle which is very tidy to use as it is, with a good service of course.. Any questions or need more images........Just email..
